Editing The Archive;

The workshop “Editing the Archive” is part of a long-term project on the films and photographs of H.F. Tillema, produced in co- lonial Indonesia in the beginning of the twen- tieth century and currently part of the dutch National Ethnological Museum collection in Leiden. The project, titled “Resequencing the Tillema Collection”, aims to destabilise as- sumed narratives and explore the generative potential of the materials, through collab- orative and iterative editing and screening sessions. The process will be documented through an experimental film and spatial installations.

To facilitate collaborative making, we designed and built a stage set consisting of a lightbox and a light projector, the first for editing the materials, the second for screen- ing the sequences cinematically. With the participants we will also produce audio com- mentaries as voiceovers. During a three-day event at Gudskul in Jakarta (3-5/8/2022), ten guests will join at different moments the workshop participants in the editing process.

The audiovisual montage will be staged cinematically at Gudskul in Jakarta and at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.
